Adapting to Sustainable Product Packaging

As a business owner, I have found that many companies and businesses today have started to go along with the trend of packaging their products in what is known as green or sustainable product packaging. As it turns out, not only does the environment benefit from this because of the packaging being made of natural materials, but the company or business selling their products can see advantages to switching to sustainable packaging as well. Many of my fellow business owners tell me that they have been able to cut down some costs and even reach out and build a reputation for their green change after having switched their product packaging to green packaging.

With my business, I wanted to find ways to improve and do better for others and the environment. With this in mind, I decided to make a switch to sustainable product packaging. What I didn’t know was that there was a lot to do and a lot of effort to exert when adapting to sustainable packaging. But nothing worth having comes easy, right? So I began to oversee what we were able to do so that the packaging of our products can become sustainable and green and benefit the environment.

So, I decided to sit alone in my office and think it all through. I had to do some redesigning of our product packaging and talk it out with the supplier and manufacturer to see what I can do. I will not really get into detail that much, but I can tell you that it took quite the effort but I was kept in mind that this was for the good of the business and the benefit of the environment as well. It was this goal that kept me going and after some time, we were able to do it. I tapped Dunwiddie Custom Packaging to help me with my plans.

We did not expect any immediate results but we also tried reaching out to our customers and see what they think about this change. I can pretty much say that they liked the idea. During our preparation, we encouraged everyone to set aside any of the packaging in a separate bin provided that they were not going to use it for anything else. We would collect this used packaging and put it back into the cycle where it is recycled into new packaging and less waste is produced. I absolutely loved this change and the feedback we got from our customers was great.

Many of them started to love the idea and said that it was really great for the environment. I also encouraged them to try finding ways in which they can utilize any of the product packaging in a way that the environment is benefited. Over the long term, I was able to see some costs going down even though we had new areas to spend on.

I have also noticed that more people are buying our products because they want to get into the trend of using green products which are packaged in natural materials and do their part for the benefit of our environment.

If You Have a Fragile Product to Sell, You Will Want to Have it Wrapped in Sustainable Product Packaging

Insert cards are a key component in many retail packages and backer cards are frequently used with a custom slide blister package or when product is attached directly to the face of the backer card. Clamshells and clear cartons are the perfect packaging products for this kind of package. Many products come packaged in these kind of packages. This kind of packaging works well for many products. Packaging is a big part of retail business. Many products are now sold with clamshell packaging and you will find that it works well. It keeps products safe and protected and it keeps them from being tampered with most of the time. Everything is in one package and visible to the public who is viewing it. This kind of sustainable product packaging is very important to the protection of the contents of the package. This kind of packaging is ideal as it allows great visibility while protecting the product. Most people will pick it up and look at the product closely, then read about it. The product remains protected while potential customers are looking and handling it. This kind of protection is very important to the products and to the manufacturer. Protection and security mean less money lost to the product being destroyed or broken. Thievery is harder, too, as the packaging makes it harder to stick in a purse or a pocket.

  1. Don’t use so many flashy colors on your packaging label; sometimes less is more. The current trend for many different packages is to make the designs as bright and eye catching as humanly possible, and while this is understandable when you consider the huge level of competition that exists today, when it comes to some products, over the top packaging can work against the products likeability. The packaging firm dunwiddie.com, has recently started to recommend that all of their clients that package food products through their firm, switch to a low key packaging design. In an age when organic products and simple ingredients are major selling points for many food products, the use of flamboyant packaging may project just the opposite idea to the customers. In the food industry the consumer is tending towards more soft colors for the food products they select, and less writing on those products. People these days want the most basic, simple image when they are seeking food items. The les that a food package says, and the less loudly it says it, can really help to make food packaging a lot more appealing. Many organic brand food companies have started to issue standard packaging for all their different food product, packaging which only has the simplest colors with the slightest variation between one product and the next. The uniform packaging technique is great at keeping a lower profile in an industry where low profile is a good thing, and it also makes the products that a company sells more recognizable to their loyal customers. When possible, clear packaging might be the best option of all, as it projects a clear image of the product the company is attempting to sell.
  2. Use packaging designs that have worked in the past. Just as is true in most areas of industry, the use of recycled company images and design themes can often bring marketing success. Have the marketing team at your company review what images and designs have been successful in the past, and alter them to fit your company image. Packaging design that was popular thirty years ago is likely to still draw in customers, as a good idea never gets old, and also because the product may draw in nostalgic shoppers that remember the packaging from when they were younger. Make sure and change any designs enough that there are no legal issues with the packaging designers original creator, as some legal issues have arisen in the past.
  3. Use packaging that hits home with the local markets. The cost of packaging is so cheap these days that even a medium sized company can afford to have a few different packaging labels for the same products in order to achieve relevance in different areas of the country. Using designs that are better recognized in the southern or western part of the country can help people in those areas connect with the product. Even the wording of the labels can be altered to resemble better the local dialects.

Three types of retail packaging

Packaging is defined as the container that is in direct contact with the product itself.  Its main purposes are to hold, protect, and preserve the product being shipped and sold in order to facilitate handling.  In addition, product packaging also helps to identify what is contained within.

While a consumer may not interact with all of them, there are three types of packaging. Primary packaging is that which is in direct contact with the product.  One example is the bag inside a cereal box that holds the cereal and keeps it fresh.

Secondary packaging is designed to hold one or more primary packages.  It serves to protect and identify the product and communicate the attributes of it. Secondary packaging is usually thrown away or recycled when the product is used or consumed.  Sticking with the cereal analogy from above, an example would be the box that the bag of cereal is contained within.

This is the packaging that tends to play a major role in whether or not products are purchased.  Also known as custom retail packaging, it is the piece that the public sees before making a decision as to what product to buy.

The advent of self‐service sales systems has caused packaging to move to the foreground in attracting attention and causing a purchase.  Initially, all of a store’s merchandise was held behind the counter and you had to ask an associate to get what you wanted or needed.  Today, many stores have taken this a step further.  Many have self-service registers. These kiosks are gaining popularity in many retail outlets and make it so that customers do not have to interact with any employees while in the store.  Since there is less and less interaction, it is up to the product to sell itself.

Since retail custom packaging is the last opportunity to persuade a consumer into a purchase, all of its elements, including text, fonts, colors, structure, and images have to be combined in such a way as to provide the consumer with a visual sales negotiation when purchasing and using the product.  This is especially important since it has been revealed that more than 9 out of ten purchasers admit to buying on impulse, at least occasionally.  Furthermore, statistics show that unplanned purchases, particularly when it comes to food, can account for over 50 percent of the purchases made.

Additionally, this secondary packaging that accompanies products goes on to live in the home of the buyer.  This means that it has the potential to become an intimate part of the purchaser's life and constitutes a type of live experience between the consumer and the brand.

The third type of packaging holds the two previous ones and serves as a way to distribute, unify and protect products throughout the commercial chain. This would be the larger cardboard box that contains up to a dozen individual cereal boxes.  Consumers generally do not see this packaging as the product is removed from it before it is placed on retail shelves.
